Vision Preservation Act Introduced!
Last week, the co-chairs of the Congressional Vision Caucus reintroduced
HR 3750, the Vision Preservation Act of 2007. This legislation will
strengthen critical federal programs to prevent blindness and save
sight.
The Vision Preservation Act bolsters vision screening, treatment, and
rehabilitation efforts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, and Federally Qualified
Health Centers. It ensures that providers are adequately trained in
recognizing vision loss and referring patients with vision loss to
appropriate follow up care. The bill would also strengthen efforts to
rehabilitate individuals with vision loss to ensure that they remain
healthy, active and independent.
Prevent Blindness America is urging its supporters to email or call
their Members of Congress and ask them to cosponsor the Vision
Preservation Act.

Urge Your Senator to Support Health Appropriations Bill
Next week, the Senate is scheduled to vote on the FY 2008 Labor, Health
and Human Services Appropriations bill. This legislation funds important
programs that improve vision health, strengthen vision loss prevention
and invest in vision research. Among other important increases, the
legislation includes a $125,000 boost for the CDC's vision screening and
education program.
President Bush has vowed to veto this bill, due to concerns over funding
levels. If enough Senators support the bill, however, they might be able
to override a Presidential veto. Prevent Blindness America is urging all
Senators to support this critical legislation.
